I didn't dare move out of my chair
Susan, Livingston, Scotland
Susan is a Logistics Planner but the skills she uses at work didn't allow her to plan her own life - she was ruled by heavy periods. As someone who was active and enjoyed an otherwise healthy, balanced lifestyle, this was particularly frustrating.
Susan, who comes from Livingston in Scotland, had always suffered from very heavy periods but had accepted them as her lot. However, after the birth of her fourth child and subsequent sterilisation, things got even worse with her periods lasting from 7 - 10 days each month and she suffered severe PMT, headaches and cramps. During her period it was as much as she could do to go to work and, once there, says she didn't dare move out of her chair in the department.
Like so many women, Susan kept putting off the visit to her GP but after 10 years finally made the move in 2006. She was discovered to be severely anaemic as a result of losing so much blood each month. The doctor told Susan about the Thermachoice procedure and, after an examination which confirmed she was a suitable candidate, it went ahead in May of 2007. She had a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay.
Just two months down the line and she told us how much better she was feeling. "The procedure has changed my life" she said. "My periods have been very light and I'm telling everyone I know that if they suffer from heavy periods not to suffer in silence...there IS something that can be done about it".
